They laughed when I said
I could fix their computer

But with a few mouse clicks,
I found the problems - and fixed them:

  • Keep new DLL files from 'bullying' older files on your PC - and causing crashes.

  • How to catch a sneaky resource thief - and stop it from stealing your PC's memory. Goodbye constant reboots and crashes!

  • Speed up your PC by as much as 70% in 6 easy steps!

  • Disk defragment program won't touch your PC's swap file. Get around that and speed up performance. Easy!

  • Where to find the latest, updated device drivers, all tested and approved by Microsoft.
You learn all this - and more - with a brilliant Windows manual that never goes out of date because it's updated continuously!

Turns their "Hah-hah-hah" into "Wow! Thanks!"

FREE 6-week trial!

Dear Reader,

My friends and family thought I was joking when I said I could fix any problem with their Windows PCs. They couldn't stop laughing.

But my brother Joe pointed to his PC's dead screen and said, "If you can fix that, you can fix anything!"

So I pulled out my trusty Windows Advisor manual, and turned on Joe's PC. It started to boot, and then promptly froze. That blue screen of death can really unnerve you. Still, I kept my cool.

I booted again, but switched the PC into diagnostic Startup mode, checked a few entries in my manual, and found the problem: his printer driver was corrupted.

I re-installed the driver from the CD-ROM that came with the printer, and the PC booted straight away. No more error messages. No more blue screen of death!

The room was silent. Nobody was laughing now!

"Wow! Thanks!" Joe said. "Can I get a copy of that manual, too?"

Chris Meadows The wonderful thing about this new publication I mentioned is that you can try it FREE for 6 weeks. It's written for both beginners like me, as well as IT/computing professionals. It's easy to understand, it covers the basics, but it also gives you advanced tips and tricks you just won't find anywhere else.

It's thorough like a book, so you can find answers to your questions. But it's also continually updated, like a newspaper or a website, so it's always up-to-date. And it includes the latest time-saving and problem-avoiding software tools on a handy CD-ROM that cuts your download time.

That's why they call it The Windows Advisor, the 3-Way PC Fast Fix Solution. And you can try it out in the comfort of your home, absolutely FREE for 6 weeks, just like I did.

Here are just a few helpful things you'll learn from your Windows Advisor manual:

  • How Device Manager may try to hide errors from you. Smoke them out with a single mouse click! See article E 5/3 in your Windows Advisor manual.

  • Overlooked Windows program you must run before you install any new components and applications. Makes it easy to find problem files fast - and fix them - if your PC stops working after the new installation. We'll tell you exactly how to run it on page F 5/13.

  • How to use a simple software setting to increase your hard drive's speed by up to 400%. Easy when you follow the steps in H1/6.

  • Don't make this mistake when uninstalling programs - it could make your PC so unstable it will crash hourly. See how to avoid this problem in I 1/14 of your Windows Advisor manual.

  • For some strange reason, Microsoft took away the Maintenance Wizard in Windows 2000 and XP. But you can outsmart them and automate the process anyway. See exactly how on page O 1/3.

  • Hidden Windows program lets you find and remove problem-causing codes left behind when programs were uninstalled. These codes could be the reason for seemingly random crashes. Easy to fix! See I 1/2.
Did you know that two hardware devices using the same settings can cause your PC to crash? I didn't until I read about it in article D 1 of The Windows Advisor. And I was glad I had when my PC crashed last Autumn.

All I did was add a new cordless keyboard my son gave me for my birthday. He promised He would come by and set it up for me. But I wanted to try doing it myself. I found it embarrassing to count on him for help with every small thing I had to do to maintain my computer.

The keyboard was supposed to be Plug & Play. But it really wasn't, so I quickly worked through the steps in The Windows Advisor, and was able to spot the problem - and fix it with a few mouse clicks. I love my new keyboard. And now that I have The Windows Advisor to help me, I'm no longer afraid to install new devices.

And I'm not afraid to fix them when they have problems. Just the other day, I was happily writing a letter to my brother-in-law, when suddenly my wireless mouse stopped working. I re-booted my PC, but that didn't help.

So I opened my copy of The Windows Advisor and looked for the answer to my problem. I flipped through the cross-referenced index, and found the solution. It was so easy, I couldn't believe it! Just 55 seconds later, my mouse was working again - and so was I.

If you were a member of The Windows Advisor service, you'd know that answer, too! And you'd be enjoying - yes, enjoying - all those pesky maintenance tasks you and I used to be so worried about.

In fact, since I got The Windows Advisor, I've tackled PC maintenance tasks I never would have dreamed of doing before. My son just can't believe it. He's asking me for help with his PC problems now. Just like it was in the old days when he was little.

For example, he knew the default settings on even the most expensive brand-new PCs are not ideal - because they're not tuned for the way you use it.

But he didn't know about simple point-and-click adjustments to Windows, which speed up your PC dramatically. Article M 10 shows you exactly how to tune your swap file and your RAM to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of your PC.

This remarkable performance increase is not the same as the 400% hard drive speed boost I mentioned earlier. They're two separate adjustments. And you can do them both - in just a few minutes!

It's amazing how easy it is to do that fine-tuning. And my son wasn't the only one who was impressed. Many of my friends didn't believe me when I talked about my PC's speed.

So when I invited a few of them to witness my super-tuned, ultra-fast computer, they
soon started asking me questions:

"Chris, what's the best way to install a device driver?"

"Windows will try to prevent you from installing it via the Control Panel, but that really is the most successful method. The Windows Advisor showed me how to work around the Control Panel restrictions at D 10/4 and D 10/7," I said.

I told them all about The Windows Advisor tips and tricks like:

"I am in touch with two Computer Clubs comprising over a hundred members and will be happy to recommend your product to them."

Peter Williams, NSW

  • When Device Manager tries to hide errors from you, you can smoke them out with a single mouse click. See E 5/3 when you get your Windows Advisor manual.

  • 2 maintenance tasks you must do regularly - and in this prescribed order - to keep your hard drive from failing and losing files. See O 1/16.

  • The hidden cause of Stop error messages in Windows. You'd probably never figure this one out without The Windows Advisor. But just a few mouse clicks can fix it once and for all! See E 11/8.

  • How to lock your desktop so nobody else can change your layout and settings. See S 5/9.

  • Exactly what to do - and how to do it - when PC game graphics are slow and jerky, databases load and process too slowly, and CDs have distorted and clipped sound. See T10/2.

  • Unless you know this secret, you can damage your graphics card beyond repair by tuning it with the wrong software program. We'll tell you what to avoid at T10/3.

  • How much system resources will a new software package need? A well-kept secret program in Windows lets you know before you install new software, which could save you lots of time and problems. See W1/10.
Now I know you may be looking at these examples and wondering how you'll ever understand things like this. But let me reassure you. The Windows Advisor is written in plain English, for people like you and me.

But don't just take my word for it. Let's look at The Windows Advisor's explanation for creating a new Windows XP System Restore Point before you install new software. This is like taking a snapshot of your PC's configuration.

  1. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

  2. Click on the option Create a restore point and click Next.

  3. Enter a name for your restore point. The current date and time are added automatically.

  4. Click Create.

See! It's not hard at all! In less than a minute, you've taken a critical step that could save you hours of agony if new software causes a problem. If new software has caused a problem, start by un-installing the software and restarting your PC. If you still have a problem, use the System Restore Point to go back to settings that were stable.

One of the great things about The Windows Advisor is that it also helps you get the most out of Microsoft Office programs, like Word. Did you know, for example, you can update all the automated fields in a document with 2 keystrokes!

  1. Press Ctrl + A to select the entire document.

  2. Press F9 to update all automated fields.

You've just updated every automated field in the entire Word document - for date, time, page number, indexes, numbering, linked documents, and merge fields!

There are many more tips and tricks about Word you can get from The Windows Advisor:

  • How to fix the problem fast when Word insists on capitalising right after an abbreviation that ends in a full stop like 'etc.'. See page E 1/5.

  • Why you may get an error message when you try to spell check a document in another language. Fast, two-step solution. See E 1/14.

  • How to set up the Word toolbar so it does everything you want it to. Remove icons and buttons you never use - and free up screen space, too! See W15/2.

  • How to make Word type long paragraphs - and even complete pages - automatically, with just 3-4 keystrokes. Perfect when you have to enter the same text again and again. See E 1/3-5.
If you write documents with specialised terms, Word won't recognise them. Instead of having to plod through a heap of useless 'corrections' every time you run spell check, use this fast 4-step process to create your own specialised dictionaries:

  1. Click Tools>Options>Spelling and Grammar.

  2. Click on the Custom Dictionaries button.

  3. Click on New.

  4. Enter a new filename and click Save. Your new dictionary's name will appear in the main window. Select the new dictionary and click Modify to add to it.
